Essential Yoga Poses for Beginners

Master these foundational asanas to build a safe, effective practice.

Mountain Pose yoga

1. Mountain Pose (Tadasana)

Stand tall, feet together, arms at sides. Ground through your feet, lengthen your spine and breathe deeply. Improves posture and body awareness.

Downward Dog pose

2. Downward Dog (Adho Mukha Svanasana)

From hands and knees, lift hips up forming an inverted V. Strengthens arms and shoulders while stretching the whole back body.

Child's Pose

3. Child's Pose (Balasana)

Kneel and fold forward with arms extended or by your sides. A gentle resting pose that releases the lower back and calms the mind.

Cobra Pose

4. Cobra Pose (Bhujangasana)

Lie on your belly, press palms down and gently lift the chest. Opens the chest, strengthens the spine and improves digestion.

Warrior Pose

5. Warrior II (Virabhadrasana II)

Wide stance, bend the front knee, extend both arms. Builds leg strength, stamina and confidence.

Tree Pose balance

6. Tree Pose (Vrksasana)

Balance on one leg with the other foot against your inner thigh. Improves focus, balance and ankle stability.

Simple 15-Minute Daily Routine

  1. Warm-up: Neck rolls, shoulder shrugs, wrist circles — 2 minutes
  2. Sun Salutation (Surya Namaskar): 4–6 rounds — 6 minutes
  3. Warrior II: Hold each side for 30 seconds — 1 minute
  4. Seated forward fold: 1 minute
  5. Cobra & Child's Pose: 2 minutes alternating
  6. Deep breathing / meditation: 3 minutes
